I know the struggle—no matter how hard you try, your makeup almost never seems to stay on when you need it to. And although you might re-apply routinely, the face that you worked so hard on in the beginning of the night, seems to disappear and smudge away by the end of the night.
As a bridal makeup artist, I need to ensure that my clients look beautiful from the time I apply their makeup to the time their wedding ends. So today I’m sharing with you some secrets to keep your makeup lasting through the night!
Properly Prep Your Skin BEFORE You Apply Makeup
Now I’m not a huge fan of most primers on the market, but making sure your skin is properly prepped is key. My personal favorite prepping product is Embryolisse, and they make two products that I carry in my kit. The first, is their Hydra Mat, which is great for oily skinned gals as it helps to properly hydrate your skin while still controlling oil production.
And second is their staple product, the Lait-Creme. It’s for normal to dry skin and helps to hydrate and prime it for makeup.
Just to reiterate, these are the first products that should be applied to your skin! This is because it acts as the base beneath your foundation, and is designed to prepare your skin for the makeup you are putting on over it.
Now go forth, and put this tip to the test!
Much like primer, setting sprays are designed to hold your makeup in place. However, these are used at the end of your makeup application, rather than at the beginning.
Honestly there are endless amounts of setting sprays you can choose from, but my personal favorite is All Nighter by Urban Decay.
Just a couple of spritzes will do the trick to keep your makeup firmly intact!
Use blotting sheets
These little beauties are my secret weapon for keeping a fresh face all night! Not only are they small and can easily fit in your purse, but they gently remove any excess oil from your skin, greatly reducing the risk of your foundation sliding off.
So after dancing to [insert Beyonce song here] this weekend, gently pat a blotting sheet on the areas of your face that tend to generate the most oils. By the end of the night, your skin will still be glowing from your makeup, and less from your sweat!
Waterproof Makeup Is Your Friend
This isn’t a tip I’d recommend every day, but if you’ve got an occasion and you’re worried about sweat or tears making sure you’re using makeup that is waterproof or water resistant is key. I personally prefer to use wax or silicone based makeup on my brides so that their tears or sweat doesn’t start to break the makeup down (and give you the telltale lines down your face).
Use a lip liner
For this last tip, I want you to channel your inner 5-year-old self. Now, remember the importance of coloring inside the lines? Well, the same goes for lipstick and lip liner.
The beauty about this trick, is that lip liner both seals your lipstick on tight, while simultaneously giving your lips that much needed shape and definition. Oh, and it will also save you endless trips to the bathroom in reapplication.
